You know that old adage, don’t judge a book by its cover? The same applies to New York’s new nightspot, Mr. Fong’s. There’s no sign over the door, no slick and sleek exterior; the outside is, actually, a little run-down and ramshackle. And it’s in the heart of Chinatown — deep in desolate-at-night Chinatown, on the corner of Market and Madison Streets, just under the Manhattan Bridge. But make no mistake — Mr. Fong’s is the new place to be, a new haunt for the downtown set. On any given night, you can spot a stylist or a Vogue editor or two while you’re enjoying a salty plum old fashioned and snacking on Malaysian jerky or steamed pork buns (the bar bites nod to the neighborhood). And, yes, there is an actual Mr. Fong; he’s the local broker and real estate manager who found the space for the owners.
