When Forbes asked Tory to name the book she’s been recommending the most these days, the answer could not have come more easily: A Life, the autobiography of the late French women’s rights champion Simone Veil. An Auschwitz survivor who trained as a lawyer and ascended to become France’s health minister, Veil fought tirelessly to defend the rights of prison inmates, immigrants, people with disabilities, and disadvantaged children. Veil, who died in 2017, was the second woman to hold full cabinet rank in France. She is best known, perhaps, for her role leading the decriminalization of abortion in France in 1975. “I found her life and the way she wrote about it fascinating,” writes Tory. “It seems that everyone is used to men ‘making’ history, and I am, of course, very interested in attempting to recalibrate that.” Read her full review here.
